Auction Stats - percentages sold and sale totals
OCTOBER AUCTION STATS
The ‘No Reserve’ Elkhart Collection RM Sotheby’s dispersal sale in the US - where 2500 bidders from 53 countries bought 100% of the cars sold for more than $41m -headed the stats for the months. Led by the $2,810,000 (£1,995,100) 1952 Ferrari 225 S Berlinetta by Vignale (illustrated above by Darren Schnabel image, courtesy of the auctioneers), 8 cars sold for more than the magic $1m including premium.
In the UK meanwhile, an internet buyer was prepared to pay £1,269,400 for a former US resident 1967 Ferrari 330GTS, displayed by Bonhams at the Goodwood Speed Week, where the absence of a Goodwood crowd and the resultant going proved to be particularly challenging. But although 54% of cars did not sell, nearly £6m was spent on those that did.
The heaviest lot to come to auction market in 2020 had to be parked outside their New Bond Street salerooms for The Golden Age of Motoring Sale. After a lively bidding battle between UK and US contestants, the coal-fuelled 1932 Fowler 10hp B6 Showman’s Road Locomotive from the final days of steam was finally clinched by a Bedfordshire collector for £911,000 by a Bedfordshire collector. Nearly £3.3m was spent on the 56% of cars auctioned that sold.
By contrast, and at a far more affordable end of the collector vehicle market, only 6 cars driven past the SWVA rostrum behind closed doors just outside Poole failed to sell during a UK market leading 94% sold Friday session, when £727,046 was spent buying 92 pop classics .
Once again, and a poignant sign of the on-line times which have become the virtual reality for most surviving sectors in pandemic times, The Market i-platform successfully linked up another 61 buyers with 70 vendors during an 87% sold month. The Abingdon-based Timed Out internet auctioneers clocked up £879,157 worth of sales in October, pushing their 2020 total to almost £9m worth of transactions for the year to date. RH-E
