JULY AUCTION STATS

Less ‘Timed Out’ and more ‘Live On-Line’ sales - though with three auctions held, where punters permitted were permitted to be present during the selling process - have become the new normal on the post national lockdowns collector vehicle auction circuit.

Once again, there was apparently no shortage of classics consigned for auction in July and, encouragingly in near universal recession, there were still absentee bidders prepared to buy many of them, sight unseen, either on commission, by telephone or, as with everything else it seems, via the internet.

More virtual salegoers however are now choosing to physically inspect cars they bid for after physically inspecting them in the metal with their documents, by appointment, during socially distanced viewing days, of which many more are being laid on.

The Historic Automobile Group International, whose indices track transactions of all kind globally, including collector cars that change hands in auctions, report that although their HAGI Top Index traded down marginally during the month (by 0.24%), the index was still up 3.87% for 2002 to the end of July.

Exceptional classic and collector’s cars meanwhile continued to perform well overall. This was most visible, HAGI report, in the Ferrari sector which rose 2.43% during July. For their HAGI F monitoring Ferrari trades also showed a year-to-date performance of 13.53% as well as 7.85% over 12 months.

Our C.A.R. stats that follow – extrapolated from those auctioneers whose sales are transparent and where results are published –are also an accurate reality check for the diligent market watcher who wishes to be best informed. These figures for the auctions sector are recommended reading therefore, we would suggest, for all sellers and buyers as well as prospective vendors and potential owners.
