This was by far the most over-crowded month of the 2020 auction year reviewed by C.A.R, which continues to select only transparently conducted sales and platforms for our coverage.

Analysis of the 18 sets of results shows that percentage sold rates achieved in September ranged from 25% up to 100%, there being three ‘White Gloves’ auctions, where all vehicles consigned ‘Without Reserve’ sold out; two of them at Gibel and Grezillac under the Artcurial gavel.

By month’s end, 10 sales had been held in front of live audiences again and buyers had bought 1473 or 76% of the 1830 classics offered for £75,112,834 with premium , the average spent at auction per car during the month being £50,993.

Gooding & Co’s debut UK sale for just 15 high value assets at Hampton Court Palace, where 14 of them sold for £34m, was the highest grossing sale of the month on both side of the Atlantic and Channel.

Historics £4.3m Ascot sale was the highest sale total achieved in September by a Brexit-UK resident house, while CCA sold the most cars, 196 of them in two sessions in Warwickshire. Motor vehicles were at least driven past the rostrum in front of a live audience again by Bonhams MPH in Hangar 113 at Bicester Heritage and The Market sold £1.34m worth of cars, including a 1968 MGC for a UK record £31,251, their highest sales total in one month this year so far!

Just as some semblance of normality was beginning to return to life as we remembered it however, politician driven spikes have deflated our balloons and the party must be put on ice, it seems, and pandemic common sense may depress consumption of so many non-essentials for many more quiet months. Only really Green People will be happy with that.
